The shooting incident. I remember it well and as I remember a young L/Sgt from the guards was guard commander. On hearing shooting from the rear of the guardroom he deployed the guard of junior soldiers . Because he thought the camp was under attack and because of the very high risk from the IRA at the time he issued live ammo from the safe in the guardroom. It was reported at the time that the L/Sgt shouted a warning to the farmer but because he was on his own land and because he thought it was someone training in the camp he continued to shoot. It was rumoured at the time although not confirmed that the L/Sgt gave the order to fire and the farmer was hit in the stomach. Could never understand why the L/Sgt did not fire a warning shot himself being vastly more experienced than the juniors. Tam Melvin |
